The former Director General of the National Commission on Higher Education (NCHE), Dr. Michael Payga Slawon, has encouraged Liberian students to pursue higher education in Information Technology (IT).
Slawon’s encouraging comment to the students came in the wake of recognizing the global advancement of technology and its role in commerce.
He said, the move will help the sector, and also enable Liberians that are creative to gin self-employment, including being marketable in the larger society.
Dr. Slawon, an expert in the education sector, sees some progress and great potential in some of the students. Therefore, he emphasized that more needs to be done to ensure that the sector gets apar with its regional and global counterparts.
He said access, quality and relevance, have been the three key issues, stressing the need to further strengthen those issues for the betterment of the sector.
Slawon has over the period, advocated and continues to advocate for improving the country’s higher education system, underscoring the importance of separating education from political interference.
In 2017, he called on politicians to leave educational matters to educators, adding: “politicizing education would not help improve the sector.”
He then warned against students abandoning classes to seek financial assistance for exams, but to follow the proper channels through their leaderships.
