Dr. John Keykpo, has expressed concerns regarding the operational challenges facing the State-run University of Liberia (UL).
Dr. Keykpo is an Associate Professor, and Director for the Graduate School in Administration and Supervision.
He spoke over the weekend to reporters of the need for a meaningful progress to build the university from the grassroots level.
He also highlighted the disconnect between faculty qualifications and the need for students.
Keykpo: “If we want to build the University, we must start from the grassroot, because an individual who has a Bachelor’s degree cannot teach bachelor’s candidates.”
His remarks underlined the need for qualified educators to effectively guide students; suggesting the increment of current faculty staff.
Dr. Keykpo also criticized the financial support for his department, which he said, is “often funded with my personal money.”
“You cannot build the University when the administration cannot provide budgetary allotments to the departments.”
He accused the administration of neglecting the need of his department, “because the UL has often refused to support me, or what I stand for in the interest of the institution.”
Keykpo then called for the University Administration to run the UL “free from political influence.”
“The UL Administration must be allowed to run the institution without political influence,” he said, noting that external pressures may be hindering the University growth and effectiveness.
On his vision for the Graduate School, Dr. Keykpo said his ambitions have been derailed over the past nine years, because of his stance on pertinent issues affecting the University.
“The dream I brought to the Graduate School was derailed for the past nine years, because of unexplained reason.”
As the UL faces the latest internal challenges, Keykpo’s statement has promoted a call to action for stakeholders to prioritize the educational needs of students, and the professional development of faculty, free from political entanglements.
As UL future hangs in the balance, while it navigates the complexities, the voice of Dr. Keykpo serves as a crucial reminder for the need to reform and support the institution.
