The Head of the Sahaba Institute High School, Sheikh Ishaka Sumaworo has urged Liberian Government to consider Ramadan and Abraham Days as national holidays in the country.
Sheikh Sumaworo stated that the Muslim community in Liberia should be not denied the opportunity of celebrating Ramadan and Abraham Days as a national holiday as these days have been declared national holiday in some countries in West Africa as well as in other parts of Africa.
Sheikh Sumaworo who delivered the sermon of Abraham Day at the Gurlay Street Mosque over the weekend in Monrovia.
According to him, Liberian Muslims are part of the citizenry of Liberia and they should benefits from what other Muslims are encouraging in the world .
He noted that it has been 40 years ago now since Muslims in Liberia have been advocating for government to grant them national holiday for Ramadan and Abraham Days through legislation but all attempts have failed.
He stressed that Muslim community cannot continue to be marginalized by subsequence governments over the years and expect Liberian Muslims to be happy with the situation.
Sheikh Sumaworo maintained that the rule of law and justice should be applied to every Liberian despite he or she status in the society.
He pointed out that Muslim community continue to contribute significantly toward the socio and economic developments of the nation.
He explained that denying the Muslim community to be on the level of other countries celebrating Ramadan and Abraham days .
Sheikh Sumaworo emphasized that this will demonstrate to Liberian muslims commitment to nation building for all Liberians.”I treated Nancy Doe with respect. We should not let anything come between us. We are one people. We need peace.”
Former President George Weah spoke these words as he presented a substantial package to the family of the late Nancy Doe. The package included 1 million Liberian dollars (approximately $5,000 USD) and 50 bags of rice.
He also pledged to provide two large cows for the funeral.
“On behalf of the CDC, my wife, and my family, I say ‘saray,'” President Weah said, before tearing up.
