The House of Representatives failed to hold session Tuesday, October 22, 2024, in the face of agitation amongst lawmakers over the planned removal of Speaker J. Fonati Koffa.
The country is likely to short down as the issue of removing the speaker continues to be the highlight of the day up Capitol Hill, with lawmakers holding separate sessions on Tuesday.
Recently, there were rumors in the corridor of the House of Representatives, about plan to remove the Speaker by some lawmakers, who alleged that the speaker is violating the constitution and the rules of the House of Representatives, leaving them with no auction but to draft a resolution to remove him.
However, the plan accordingly met resistance last Thursday from pro speaker lawmakers on grounds that removing the speaker was unconstitutional.
On Monday this week, the embattled speaker said his colleagues’ plan is their right, but maintained that there is still room for negotiations; as such, he decided to dialogue with them, emphasizing that dialogue is better than confusion.
Nevertheless, the dialogue is deadlocked on grounds that the opposition lawmakers are not willing for talks due to their constant resistance to smoke peace pipe.
As the tussle continues on up Capitol Hill, both the anti Koffa bloc and pro Koffa group held separate sessions on Tuesday, thus leaving the Liberian people’s work undone as both parties could not have a quorum to carry out their duties as the people deputies.
In the Joint Chamber of the National Legislature, the anti Koffa bloc had 42 members but could not succeed because the number needed to reach 49 to give the group an edge to carry out the people’s work.
On the other hand, Speaker Koffa also attempted to have session but the number of Representatives could not meet quorum, on grounds that there were only 30 lawmakers present, which accordingly resulted to the Speaker mandating the Sergeant- at- Arm to ensure that the lawmakers come to session this Thursday.
Speaking Kofax further said the decision of his colleagues to boycott session is illegal; hence, he has decided to do everything possible to ensure that the Liberian people’s works is done.
He maintained that since some of the lawmaker have decided to boycott session, as Speaker, he will use all legal means, reminding his colleagues that the plan is illegal and unconstitutional, cautioning them to do the right thing.
Speaker Koffa at the same time stressed that if the opposition bloc refuses to go to session on Thursday of this week, the leadership of the House of Representatives will have no auction but to deal with them through the constitution and law of the land, by issuing the a rate of mandamus, which accordingly will compel them to do the Liberian people’s business which they were elected for.
He further informed the gathering that, if his colleagues on the other side don’t succeed in the plan, the country is likely to short down, stressing that members of both sides will not be working and they should not also be paid.
