A joint team has launched a fact-finding mission in Grand Bassa County Electoral District #1.
This followed reports of a possible oil discovery in Doewein Town, about 15 minutes from the Owengrove Checkpoint, outside Buchanan.
Members of the team comprised Grand Bassa County Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS).
The delegation, led by Grand Bassa Administrative Officer James W. Duen, and supported by EPA directors, began community engagement on Monday, December 1,2025.
The exercise is part of the process of the team, which worked with district and town leaders, to collect samples for laboratory testing of the ‘oil.’ Authorities have assured that the results will be presented to the County Administration, and later, shared with residents.
During the sample collection exercise, residents recounted “the history of the black substance” in the area. Several of them claimed to have extracted ‘oil’ in large quantities, reportedly filling hundreds of six-gallon containers, which they have stored in their homes, while awaiting official confirmation.
Technical teams, along with community members, dug in several spots around Doewein Town, revealing traces of the black substance.
However, officials caution that the material cannot yet be confirmed as ‘crude oil’ until laboratory tests by EPA technicians are complete.
