Community Dwellers On Sand Mining’s Accountability

By John Dennis Weah

A resident of Down Street Community in Caldwell Township, has expressed concern about accountability of money collected from sand miners near the township.

Over the years, the community has been involved with sand mining, but it is virtually experiencing low account of basic social and economic services.

The environment is endowed with natural resources that some dwellers viewed as lucrative, and an essential component to develop the community.

Residents criticized the MoU signed between the community and the sand mining company, which they said, placed the community at low gains in terms of benefit.

It is recorded that US$5 is paid per truck load of sand leaving the area.

A resident, Kamboh Marvis Kamboh, feels that the leadership is not properly structured to ensure a proper MoU that would protect accountability of mining activity in the community.

“What the community is getting out of these operations is so small, and in my view, it is important that they go back to the book, and augment what is being given to the community. This will improve living condition here.”
