CoC Amendments Under Review

By Fiona Benson Kollie

Members of the 55th House of Representatives have reviewed every existing law as part of effort to further improve the lives of Liberians.

Upon this back drop, a specialized committee was set up, tasked with the responsibility to review portions of the Code of Conduct (CoC).

The process started Monday, June 22, 2026, with public hearings on the proposed amendments to the legislation.

The committee convened its first hearing, which involved officials of the National Elections Commission (NEC) and the Governance Commission (GC).

The hearing focused on a bill seeking amendments to sections 5.1 and 5.2 of the National Code of Conduct, particularly provisions governing the resignation of public officials seeking elected office.

The proposed amendment, introduced by Montserrado County District #12 Representative, Jerry K. Yorgbor, seeks to remove language referencing officials, who “desire to canvass or contest” elected office while reaffirming existing resignation requirements.

NEC chair, Jonathan K. Weedor, who appeared before the committee, outlined the Commission’s position on the proposed amendment and its implications for electoral process.

Governance Commission, Acting Chairman Alaric K. Tokpa, also discussed governance and legal considerations surrounding the proposal.

Tokpa emphasized the importance of maintaining clarity and consistency in the interpretation of public service regulations.

Meanwhile, House Chair of the Specialized Committee, Ernest M. Manseah, assured that the committee would carefully examine all submissions, observations, and recommendations before reaching a determination on the proposed amendment.

Manseah said, the committee eventual recommendation would be based on the evidence, opinions and legal perspectives presented during the public hearing process.
