The former President of the Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA) has called for the immediate arrest of majority bloc Speaker Richard Koon. Counselor Tiawan S. Gongloe, in an exclusive interview said Rep. Koon must also be charged with Criminal Mischief for ordering the forceful opening of District #9 Representative Yekeh Kolubah’s vehicle after he (Kolubah) parked his vehicle in the space reserved for the Speaker. The renowned Liberian lawyer maintained that under the law, destruction of properties is Criminal Mischief. Cllr. Gongloe noted that Majority Bloc Speaker Koon as a lawmaker needs to know that he’s not above the law and must be prosecuted for his action. Cllr. Gongloe recalled his time as Solicitor General when he ordered the arrest and prosecution of former Margibi County Senator Roland Kahn whose name was mentioned in a murder case. He said Speaker Koon was legally and morally wrong to order the decimation of Rep. Kolubah’s vehicle; especially with rumors circulating that he (Koon) is planning not to go to court when he is called for Rep. Kolubah’s complaint. Cllr. Gongloe reminded the Majority Bloc Speaker that the court can charge him with contempt if he refuses to show up. Cllr. Gongloe who is also former presidential candidate during the 2023 presidential and legislative elections, has refused to recognize Rep. Koon as Speaker of the House of Representatives, arguing that he is not a ‘Speaker.’ He explained that the process through which he was given garble is absolutely illegitimate. Cllr. Gongloe also described President Boakai’s recent State of the Nation Address as illegal on grounds that Rep. Richard Nagbe Koon was the one presiding. “The SONA could have been legitimate if Deputy Speaker Thomas Fallah was the one presiding,” Cllr. Gongloe argued. He said giving garble to Koon was a major constitutional disregard. Cllr. Gongloe reminded the current government that it ascended to power on the basis of upholding the rule of law but is now acting in the opposite of what it promised.
