Chief Justice Calls . . .

Strengthening ECOWAS Court Enforcement

The Chief Justice of the Republic of Liberia, Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay Sr., along with other ECOWAS Chief Justices, during a courtesy call on the President of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Bio, who is Chairman of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State,

The Liberian Chief Justice, who is currently in attendance of the ECOWAS Statutory meeting in Freetown, Sierra Leon, scheduled to run from April 20th -24th, stated that the ECOWAS Community Court of Africa is a brain-child of ECOWAS and it has made significant achievements, especially in the area of promoting human rights in the region.

Chief Justice Gbeisay, however, cautioned that a daunting challenge is posed by the court’s inability to enforce its judgments. He reminded the President of Sierra Leon that the essence of a court is to render judgment, and the essence of judgment is enforcement; when judgment is enforced, justice is served.

He, therefore, calls upon the President of Sierra Leone in his capacity as Chairman of the authority of ECOWAS heads of state and government and a charismatic leader, to use his influence and put mechanisms in place for the effective enforcement of the ECOWAS Court Judgment, noting that a court without authority to enforce its judgment is a waste of time, resources, and energy.

He also call for strengthening the ECOWAS Court judgment
