The collapse of the Chengbetee Bridge has completely cut off the Geeken–Karkakpo road corridor, disrupting movement between Grand Kru and Sinoe counties thus leaving businesspeople, traders, and transport operators counting mounting financial losses.

The bridge, which connects Buah to Upper Bolloh, is a key transportation link for communities along the corridor.

The collapse of the bridge has made the road impassable to vehicles, forcing traders to seek costly alternatives or suspend business activities altogether.

Business operators have claimed increased transportation costs as goods are now carried by motorbikes or on foot across unsafe sections of the road.

Many traders said perishable goods are being lost due to delays, while others have been unable to reach markets in neighboring communities.

Businessman ZayzayTogba said the impact on economic activities has been severe.

He criticized authorities for failing to maintain critical infrastructure despite ongoing mining operations in Grand Kru District #2, where more than 40 excavators are reportedly operating.

Togba further disclosed that approximately US$1,000 is collected monthly from mining activities in the area, but affected communities continue to suffer from neglected roads and bridges.

“This bridge is the backbone of trade for our people. Its collapse has forced businesspeople into serious losses and left communities isolated,” Togba said.

Residents also said there are difficulties accessing healthcare, education, and emergency services, as ambulances and service vehicles can no longer reach several towns and villages.

Businesspeople and community members hove called on the Grand Kru County administration, the Ministry of Public Works, and the central government to urgently rehabilitate the Chengbetee Bridge and restore the Geeken–Karkakpo road corridor.

As of press time, there has been no official response from government authorities regarding plans to repair the bridge.
