The acting principal of the Millsburg Public School in Millsburg Township, Lower Montserrado County, has requested the government to upgrade the Millsburg Public School.
Reverend Williams T. Wright wants increased employment and incentives to qualified volunteer teachers, and provide safe-drinking water and sanitation at the school.
Also, Representative Bernard Blue Benson, alias ‘DJ Blue’ of Montserrado District #17, discovered during a recent tour to his constituents that students were fetching drinking water from nearby wells dug for garden purpose.
The lack of safe-drinking water in the township prompted Benson to immediately starts donating over 100 sachets of mineral water, and the rapid repair of existing pumps to help the students and the community from drinking the well water.
Rev. Wright said, the school is now undergoing transformation despite the challenges encountered when he took assignment there about two years ago.
“Though, we were challenged during the early days of our assignments, we have lobbied by influencing up to six educators, who understood the regress of education in the community. They agreed to initially volunteer their services to the school.”
He said, the faculty is unrelenting to engage duty bearers to advance the school from elementary to junior high level.
School-going kids are finding it difficult to access a decent learning environment due to the lacked of teachers and other basic services.
The community, Wright said, “is under immense pressure to provide monthly stipends to all of the volunteer teachers.”
He outlined the availability of incentives, housing accommodation, renovation and construction of teachers’ quarter as key issues that need to be tackled for teachers, who have taken assignments in rural parts of the country.
“I met the learning standard at 3rd grade, because there were only two employed teachers before I joined them to raise the number to three teaching staff.”
According to Wright, the situation has led many teenagers to either drop from school or relocate to other places.
Following a brief assessment to Millsburg community, Rep. Benson released findings via social media; noting that the issue of safe drinking water is critical to address.
