A team from the Liberia Chainsaw and Timber Dealers Union (LICSATDUN), led by Julius Kamara, has successfully concluded a daylong dialogue with various stakeholders in the county.
The dialogue focused on raising awareness about the chainsaw regulations, which the government established.
The event, held in Barclayville, underscored the importance of sustainable forest management, and the effective implementation of regulations designed to protect the country’s rich forest resources.
The dialogue gathered representatives from community groups, environmental organizations, government agencies, and the private sector.
The participants discussed strategies for engaging communities in sustainable practices related to forest management aimed to clarify the roles and responsibilities outlined in the chainsaw regulations. Authorities at the Forestry Development Authority (FDA) issued the regulations.
Kamara highlighted the critical needs for stakeholders’ collaboration in preserving the country’s forests. He is one of the heads of the LICSATDUN team.
“Our forests are not just natural resources; they are the backbones of our communities and the environments,” Kamara said.
“By working together, we can ensure that the chainsaw regulations are not just policies on paper, but are actively embraced and implemented in ways that benefit both people and nature,” he said.
According to Kamara, the chainsaw regulations, developed in partnership with the FDA, were instituted to regulate the use of chainsaws in logging activities, ensuring that they are used sustainably and legally.
These regulations aim to curb illegal logging practices that have led to significant deforestation and environmental degradation.
Throughout the day, participants were engaged in breakout sessions discussing practical approaches to community involvement in forest management.
They discussed topics including the importance of local knowledge in resource management, the economic benefits of sustainable forestry, and the need for monitoring and enforcement of the chainsaw regulations.
The dialogue concluded with a call to action for all participants to commit to implementing the chainsaw regulations and promoting sustainable practices within their networks.
LICSATDUN team, meanwhile, pledged to continue engaging with stakeholders to facilitate workshops and training sessions with the aim to enhance compliance with the new regulations.
