The Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) has criticized President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for allegedly attempting to destabilize the state through political maneuvers, including the removal of Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, which the the former governing party claimed undermines checks and balances in government.
Meanwhile, CDC has announced the temporary suspension of several lawmakers whom the party believes have deviated from party principles and are being used in these political schemes.
The CDC also congratulated President-Elect Donald Trump on his election victory, viewing it as a reaffirmation of American democracy.
. “The National Executive Committee of the Congress for Democratic Change appreciates all Americans for the successful conduct of the 2024 American elections and congratulates President-Elect Donald Trump on his historic win. Former President Trump’s win is a testament to the strength of American Democracy, which shows exceptional respect for the will of the people,” the CDC has noted.
In another development, the National Executive Committee called on President Boakai to desist from his ‘selfish political desire’ to destabilize the democracy of the state. “Mr. Boakai is dangerously attempting to impose a one-party-dominant state and undermine checks and balances in the Government, with the Executive Branch interfering and dominating the Legislature and disrespecting the decisions of the Liberian Judiciary,” the CDC claimed.
“Mr. Boakai is unbothered amid the Government’s failure to pay the AFL and other government workers, massive off-budget spending, rampant corruption at several government institutions, the LRRRC, etc., but chooses to waste State resources by sponsoring the removal of Speaker J. Fonati Koffa. It is evident that Mr. Boakai and his Unity Party Government are crumbling under the weight of their government and are seeking escape through possible instability that may result from his dangerous political maneuvering, including the continuous political harassment of the CDC and the unlawful removal of the Speaker,” the party further alleged.
According to the party, given the risk this ploy of the Unity Party poses to “our democratic practices, the CDC is surprised that some of its partisans who are lawmakers will allow themselves to be used in this process.
This act of the partisans violates Part II, Chapter I, Rule 5 of the CDC Constitution. Hence, the Party will create no space for such deviant partisans. The Party has therefore decided to, in keeping with Part II, Chapter I, Rule 14 to TEMPORARILY SUSPEND those partisans who are lawmakers being used and request them, in keeping with Part I, Article 15, Section 80 and Part II, Chapter I, Rule 17 & 18 to avail themselves of the National Disciplinary Committee (Grievance and Ethics Committee) for investigation.
