CCRB To Probe Kinjor’s Killing By: Yassah J. Wright

Established in 2016 by an act of legislation, the Civilian Complaints Review Board (CCRB) tasked with direct involvement in the citizen complaints process and develop solutions to improve government accountability, has received the investigative report about police brutality against civilians throughout the country. These reports were made available to the board by Justice Minister, Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh. One of such reports involved the incident at the Bea Mountain Mining Company’s Concession, in Kinjor, Grand Cape Mount, where police officers killed score of civilians who were protesting against the maltreatment of the workers and the community by the company.  The disclosure was made by Cllr. Sylvester Rennie, President of the Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA) and chairman of the board. According to a release, the board has received the full report from the LNP through the Minister of Justice /Attorney General, Cllr. Rennie however assured families of the victims and the country that they were ready to review the report and make the necessary recommendations to the Minister of Justice that will be void of prejudice. “While reviewing the port, we will conduct investigations where necessary and where clarifications are needed, for the establishment of the truth,” the released quoted Cllr. Rennie. Rennie added, “We want to assure the public that it will conduct a transparent review of the reports and will make the necessary recommendations to the Minister of Justice.” In a related development, the CCRB also received an Investigative Report from the Crime Services Division of the Liberia National Police (LNP) through the Office of the Minister, regarding an alleged Manslaughter and Aggravated Assault by employees of the Liberia Electricity Corporation, for its review and subsequent recommendations. The Board is chaired by the President of the Liberian National Bar Association (LNBA), other members include representatives are the Ministers of Justice and Internal Affairs, the Chair of the Independent National Commission on Human Rights, the President of the Federation of Liberian Youth (FLY), the Chair of the National Civil Society Council and the President of the Liberia National Law Enforcement Association.
