The national food security, has received a significant boost from a research paper presented by Mrs. Zipporah Page. Mrs. Page is the Research Officer for the Crops Program at the Central Agricultural Research Institute (CARI). At a recent seminar at CARI’s headquarters in Suakoko, Bong County, Mrs. Page unveiled the official findings of an in-depth study focused on improving rice production in the country. The event brought together agricultural researchers, policymakers, development partners, and field technicians. They were to review scientific insights designed to enhance local rice yields, and strengthen self-sufficiency in food production.
Mrs. Page: “The research assessed multiple rice varieties under Liberia’s diverse agro-ecological conditions.”
She added: “We examined yield performance, resistance to pests and diseases, soil adaptability and farmer acceptance.”
“Our findings showed up several high-yielding varieties that demonstrate resilience to climate challenges, and strong potential for adoption nationwide.”
Mrs. Page said, improving local rice production is central to reduce dependence on imports.
“The country spends millions annually on rice importation. By promoting locally tested, high-performing varieties, we can empower smallholder farmers, improve livelihoods, and move closer to agricultural self-sufficiency.”
The seminar also showcased CARI’s ongoing initiatives in seed multiplication, farmer field trials, and capacity-building programs.
The programs aimed at equipping farmers with the knowledge and resources to successfully adopt the new rice varieties.
Mrs. Page highlighted CARI’s broader mission; reaffirmed her commitment to produce research that directly benefits farmers and the nation.
“Our goal is to ensure scientific discoveries translate into real-world solutions for agricultural challenges.”
The event underscored CARI’s vital role in advancing agricultural development, demonstrating that innovation, sustainability, and farmer empowerment remain at the heart of the country journey toward food security and economic stability.
