Bong Honors Dr. Tokpa

-For Transforming Cuttington University

Several citizens of Bong County have honored renowned Kpelle academician, former Cuttington University President and former Bong County Senator, Dr. Henrique Flomo Tokpa, for what organizers described as his outstanding legacy of leadership, educational reform and human capacity development in Liberia.

The honoring program celebrated Dr. Tokpa’s years of service and his impact on thousands of Liberian students during his administration at Cuttington University from 2005 to 2013 — a period many described as one of the institution’s most transformational eras.

Providing an overview of the program, organizer Lepolu Torlon said the event was organized by Dr. Tokpa’s former colleagues, mentees, scholarship beneficiaries and family members in recognition of his contributions to higher education and national development.

Torlon noted that Dr. Tokpa’s administration opened educational opportunities for many underprivileged Liberian students through several scholarship initiatives, including the Work-Study Scholarship Program, Presidential Scholarships, High School Dux Scholarships and educational support programs for persons living with disabilities.

Organizers praised Dr. Tokpa for championing academic excellence and staff development during his tenure, noting that many faculty and staff members were sponsored to pursue master’s and doctoral degrees at universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ghana, Nigeria and Botswana.

The program also highlighted several institutional reforms introduced under his leadership, including tuition waivers for university employees, their children and graduate students — measures organizers said strengthened professional development within the university community.

Speakers further credited Dr. Tokpa for helping to advance graduate education at Cuttington University, including support for Liberia’s first master’s degree programs in business, as well as the expansion of the university’s graduate school in Monrovia and the junior college in Kakata, Margibi County.

The event brought together government officials, educators, alumni, students, traditional leaders and beneficiaries of Dr. Tokpa’s educational initiatives, all of whom described his contributions as a lasting investment in Liberia’s future.

Activities marking the occasion included award presentations, gowning ceremonies and tributes from invited guests who praised Dr. Tokpa’s dedication to education and national service.

A major highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of a special honoring citation and the launch of an annual award and scholarship initiative aimed at supporting deserving Liberian students pursuing higher education in selected academic disciplines.

Many speakers at the event described Dr. Tokpa as a visionary leader whose contributions continue to shape the educational landscape of Liberia years after leaving public office.
