President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, has reassured traditional leaders that their voices will play the decisive role in shaping the nation’s cultural reforms.
The President assurance signaled a historic commitment to preserve heritage, while advancing national development.
He made the pronouncement at the conclusion of the National Assembly of Chiefs and tribal governors in Gbarnga, Bong County.
The gathering brought together chiefs and tribal governors from the 15 counties.
The Assembly focused on fostering collaboration between government, and traditional authorities to ensure that national policies reflect the values, wisdom, and aspirations of local communities.
Pres. Boakai, who recently proposed legislation to address ‘harmful cultural practices,’ said his administration does not intend to dismantle Liberia’s rich cultural heritage.
Instead, he said, the reforms will be implemented in consultation with traditional leader; respecting their central role as custodians of the “country identity.”
“We will not consciously eliminate our culture. Traditional culture has guided our people, and shaped who we are. In every nation, culture is the soul, and Liberia is no different.”
He added that while the government may propose reforms, the ultimate decision rests with the traditional leaders themselves.
“The traditional people have the right to express their feelings about the future of our country. We will work closely with them to ensure that any changes strengthen our nation without eroding our traditions.”
The Assembly was hosted with constructive discussions on balancing cultural preservation with national efforts to curb harmful practices, demonstrate a shared commitment to progress that honors our heritage.
Pres. Boakai’s inclusive approach has been widely praised as a model of consultative governance, and respect for tradition.
By placing traditional leaders at the center of decision making, the government is ensuring that Liberia’s cultural evolution is guided by those, who know it best.
