Boakai Receives Backing For ‘Anti-Drug Plan’

The Mano River Union Youth Parliament, Liberia Chapter (MRUYP-LC), has voiced support for President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, recently announced National Anti-Drug Action Plan.

The group framed the President plan as a “decisive move against the rampant drug abuse; a crisis plaguing the nation.”

The Speaker of the Parliament, Daniel Nills, stated that as Liberians grapples with the devastating effects of substance abuse, the timing and efficacy of the August 7 march was of concerned.

The well-organized and executed march, brought together cross-section of citizens, chanting: “No To Drugs!!” as they marched through the streets of Monrovia.

Nills praised Pres. Boakai’s ‘Action Plan’ as a “strong and unequivocal stance,” positioning the President as a leader with ‘political will’ to tackle any “national emergency.” The youth organization has meanwhile, promised to intensify awareness campaigns and engage stakeholders in combating drug abuse.

Furthermore, Nills and colleagues have proposed whistleblower program with the intent to empower young Liberians in identifying traffickers and drug hideouts; a situation, the group said, “presents a range of challenges.”

“While community-level intelligence is crucial, the feasibility and safety of such initiatives must be scrutinized,” Nills said.

He spoke of concerns, whether some of the young informants will be adequately protected, and how will the government ensure that the August 7 march does not lead to false accusations or reprisals against innocent individuals into drug abuse?

The youth parliament’s determination to mobilize country’s youth against drug abuse is commendable, but one must question whether this plan will translate into tangible outcomes or remain a well-meaning slogan?

Moreover, the timing of the announcement raises eyebrows.

Nills: “The anti-drug initiative is a strategic move to rally public support, and divert attention from other pressing issues facing the Boakai administration. while the MRUYP-LC’s endorsement of the President anti-drug plan is a step in the right direction; it is essential to maintain a critical eye on the unfolding developments.”

The fight against drug abuse demands actionable strategies, genuine community engagement, and a long-term commitment to creating a safer environment for the youthful population.
