‘Liars, They Are’

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has issued a fiery response to demonstrators who flooded the streets with placards accusing him of dishonesty.

At  the official launch of the Liberia AI Challenge 2025 at the EJS Ministerial Complex in Congo Town, Pres.  Boakai addressed the protest head-on:

“I see protesters on their placards saying, ‘Boakai can lie’. But let me tell them that they can lie and we are moving this country forward,” the President declared to loud applause from his supporters.

The comments came just hours after mass protests organized by the STAND Movement and the We the People Coalition, demanding accountability and transparency from his administration.

While protesters accused the government of failing to deliver on its promises, Pres. Boakai used the high-profile tech event to reaffirm his commitment to national progress and innovation.

The Liberia AI Challenge, designed to boost digital innovation and youth empowerment, was momentarily overshadowed by the political undertone of the President’s remarks signaling that tensions between the government and sections of the public are far from cooling.
