President Joseph Nyuma Boakai officially launched the Ministry of Local Government (MLG).

The launch also coincided with the dedication of a newly renovated JNB Decentralization Building.

The ceremony marked a step to enhanced local governance and decentralization.

Pres. Boakai stressed the importance of local governance, stating: “The idea of Local Government is crucial to decentralization and governance. We are committed to ensure that our people have a decent way of life.”

He expressed pride in the new building, praising local contractors for their “exemplary work, and reinforcing the need for dedicated individuals who prioritize the nation’s interests.”

“This is a journey that does not stop. Those who believe our actions are drastic will see the positive outcomes in the end. We are here to deliver for the betterment of this country, and assure you that we are opening up every corner.”
The Minister of Local Government-Designate, F. Sakila Nyumalin, also highlighted the capable leadership necessary for the decentralization and local governance.

The project, Nyumalin said, is estimated at US$500,000. It is a pivotal step to implement the revenue-sharing law, ensure fair allocations of resources, and maintain a commitment to peace and national reconciliation.

He expressed gratitude to all partners involved in the decentralization efforts, and acknowledged the ongoing support from the legislature, particularly for drafting the Local Government Bill.

Nyumalin recalled progress made over the past two years at county service centers, generated over US$6 million and the appointment of over 1,800 chiefs.

He recognized challenges, stating: “There are institutional and capacity gaps at both central and county levels. Financing for local government remains a major constraint.”

To address this, Nyumalin announced plans to establish a Ministry of Local Government Institute to train officials and enhance the Ministry’s capacity.

The launch also featured remarks from Senator Prince K Moye Chair on Ways Means and Finance, who underscored the importance of peace and inclusion in development.

He said, decentralization is a complex journey that requires collaboration and commitment from all stakeholders.

Philip Fatorma, CEO of the Agency for Rural Development and Maintenance Service, who presented the Project, highlighted the new building features that include 100-seat capacity rooms, disabled access ramps, conference rooms, and ample parking space.

The project has been executed to high standards, renewing hope for Liberian-owned construction.
