Bong County University (BCU) has officially begun the process of taking over the facilities of Sumo Moye Memorial Technical College (SMMTC).

The takeover exercise is part of an ongoing merger between the two institutions.

BCU President Dr. Alfredson Tiakerwayeh, Sr. made the announcement following an inspection tour of the facilities.

The visit came after SMMTC Chief Executive Director, Senator Prince Kermue Moye Sr., formally confirmed the transition.

Dr. Tiakerwayeh said, the inspection was intended to verify facilities, and data collected for the drafting of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between BCU and SMMTC.

“We have come to observe the facilities before we can formally claim ownership on behalf of the people of Bong County. The senator has turned this institution over for use by BCU, and we are here to see what has been given to the people.”

Tiakerwayeh highlighted the facilities supporting the nursing program, particularly a demonstration lab he described as “the largest in our region.” He added that equipment and resources from BCU’s main campus will be transferred to SMMTC to enhance academic delivery and ensure consistent standards.

Dr. Tiakerwayeh said, the MoU will be completed and made public “as soon as possible” to ensure transparency.

He suggested the retaining of the Sumo Moye name under the merger to honor the founder’s legacy.

On concerns about staff, Dr. Tiakerwayeh assured that the agreement would include arrangements for administration and human resources.

“The human resource is a cardinal asset to the institution. We have not come to remove people from jobs, but to improve their workings on the job.”

Tiakerwayeh meanwhile, encouraged residents and students to focus on the educational opportunities that the merger provides, stressing the importance of skills development, employability, and maximizing the benefits of the expanded university system.

The BCU Board of Trustees will determine the final structure and naming of the institution under the merger, while ensuring that SMMTC’s legacy is appropriately preserved.
