The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA), has launched an anti-phone theft regulations awareness campaign in Maryland County.

The exercise aims to curb mobile phone theft through a centralized registration and monitoring system.

The initiative involves registering mobile phones using their unique international mobile equipment identity (IMEI) numbers, which will help authorities track and recover “stolen devices.”

LTA Senior Economic Regulatory Analyst Kwatamba Q. Bettie said, the IMEI number serves as a digital fingerprint for mobile devices, containing key details like the phone’s make, model and status.

By registering these numbers, authorities can identify specific devices connected to telecommunications networks and block stolen phones from accessing network services.

In this regard, LTA plans to collaborate with GSM service providers and officers of the Liberia National Police to implement the system, which will enable authorities to track stolen phones and prevent criminals from reselling the “stolen phones.” Bettie said, the initiative is to strengthen consumer protection, reduce mobile phone theft, and improve security within the telecommunications sector.

The awareness campaign is part of LTA’s broader efforts to regulate the telecommunications industry and protect consumers.

In related news, LTA has introduced regulations to ensure fair access to numbering resources and wholesale access to telecom networks for Value-Added Services (VAS).
