A lady (name withheld) over the weekend ‘burned the hands’ of her two young girls for “eating cassava” she had set aside for her boyfriend.
The horrific incident reportedly took place at two separate locations (Nimba and Sinoe) counties, leaving the children with severe burns and emotional trauma.
The girls are currently receiving urgent medical treatment at a local healthcare facility.
Sources say the burns were inflicted using hot plastic, and the children were also reportedly locked indoors for two days without food as punishment for the alleged act.
According to Government Agenda Reporters (GAR-Liberia), the woman, who is not the biological mother of the children, carried out the punishment in a fit of anger over the cassava, which she claimed, belonged to her boyfriend.
Neighbors and family members expressed shock at the incident, describing it as “unimaginable, and cruel beyond measure.”
Authorities were alerted after the children’s condition worsened, prompting the arrest of the suspect. She is currently being held at Monrovia Central Prison awaiting court proceedings.
Officials have condemned the act, and urged caregivers to treat children with care and protection, warning that anyone found guilty of such abuse, will face the full extent of the law.
