The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) made a significant drug seizure on September 16, 2024, at the Bo Waterside Port of entry, uncovering 400 plates of compressed marijuana valued at approximately USD 22,724. The operation involved a routine search of a white mini bus with a Guinean license plate (#AG 1253), during which two drivers fled the scene. According to an official release from the LDEA, one of the fleeing drivers, identified as 39-year-old Ansumana Kanneh, a Liberian resident of Gardnersville, was later apprehended by Joint Security Officers at the Tienii Checkpoint. The mini bus has been impounded, and Kanneh is currently undergoing custodial investigation pending court proceedings. The seized marijuana, weighing 299 kg, was confirmed through testing to be illegal substances. In a separate operation on September 17, LDEA agents conducted drug raids across several ghettos in Montserrado, leading to the arrest of multiple suspected drug dealers. Various illicit substances were seized, including marijuana, kush (methamphetamine), cocaine, and heroin, totaling 270.7 grams with a street value of USD 6,538.64. Those arrested are also under investigation. In light of the raids, LDEA has placed two agents, Abraham Goffa and Jusu Varney, on administrative leave following allegations of misconduct. They are accused of taking personal belongings from residents during the drug raids. The agency has referred the matter to its Board of Internal Inquiry and Professional Standards for further investigation, emphasizing its commitment to transparency and accountability in operations.
