AMET University (Academy) of Maritime Education and Training. It is a private Deemed university located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The institute is one of its kind technology-oriented institute of higher education in India dedicated for maritime Studies.

The pair are pursuing master’s degrees in Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering at AMET University.

Solomon Tugbah Nyema, Jr., a 2023 graduate in civil engineering, and Lucidia Mackaylane Sherman, who earned her degree in mechanical engineering earlier this year, are the first Liberians to enter the specialized field.

Their studies are being funded through full scholarships provided by the Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA).

Both candidates secured admission after excelling in LiMA’s competitive home-based examination, and the Graduate Record Examination.

University officials described the pair acceptance as “evidence of the caliber of Tubman University’s engineering program.”

“This milestone reflects TU’s vision of producing graduates ready to lead on the global stage,” said Dr. Olu Q. Menjay, PhD, TU’s president and chief executive officer.

Meanwhile, Dr. Menjay has extended his profound gratitude to Counsellor Neto Zarzar Lighe, Sr., Commissioner of LiMA for his forward-thinking leadership, and passion in training young Liberians for real service to country.

Students Nyema and Sherman have pledged to return to Liberia upon completion of their studies, with the aim to strengthen the maritime and offshore engineering sector, a field seen as critical to Liberia’s long-term economic growth.
