House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon, has underscored the importance of parliamentary diplomacy, global cooperation, and sustainable development in addressing today’s pressing global challenges.
Koon statement was contained in his recent address to members of the National People’s Congress (NPC) of the People’s Republic of China.
He spoke during a group meeting with the NPC on the margins of the 2025 Legislators Forum for Friendly Exchanges in Beijing, China.
Mr. Koon also extended heartfelt appreciation to the Chinese Government, and the people for their continued partnership and support to Liberia.
In his address, he spoke of how the world is today confronted with complex challenges, such as climate change, international terrorism, cyber threats, entrenched poverty, migration, trade barriers and human rights violations.
He said as representatives of the people, they must work collaboratively to enact laws that will promote global peace, security and stability.
“The harmonious coexistence of sovereign nations and adherence to international laws that underpin fundamental human rights are cardinal in maintaining global peace,” said Mr. Koon.
He also praised China’s remarkable economic growth and global impact since its reforms of 1978.
Mr. Koon called on the NPC to support struggling parliaments worldwide in building their institutional capacities as part of a global parliamentary network initiative.
The Forum was hosted on the theme: “Building Global Partnership for Joint Advancement of Common and Sustainable Development.”
On this, Koon called for stronger parliamentary unity, cooperation, and coordination to articulate a shared agenda that fosters inclusive growth and prosperity.
He expressed appreciation for China’s continued interventions in Africa, highlighting investments in education, Agriculture, Infrastructure, TVET, and trade relations.
He particularly commended the construction of two annexes at the Liberian Legislature, and the recent groundbreaking of country’s first-ever overhead bridges that valued at $US30.6 million as tangible demonstrations of China’s commitment to Liberia’s development.
“With sincere commitment and genuineness of true partnership, we will continue to cherish these strong ties with renewed assurances in promoting the One China Policy and strengthening legislative engagements in the years ahead,” Mr. Koon reaffirmed.
He meanwhile, called on his fellow legislators worldwide to invigorate their unity and deepen global parliamentary exchanges as a means of moving the international community forward in peace, cooperation, and sustainable developments.
