In a heartfelt farewell message shared on her official Facebook page on Sunday, March 16, 2025, Madam Emma Meteih Glassco,ย former Commissioner General of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) expressed gratitude to the Liberian government and the NaFAA team for the opportunity to serve the country.
Glassco’s departure followed the recent appointment of J. Cyrus Saygbe as Acting Commissioner General by President Boakai on March 14, 2025.
Reflecting on her tenure, Glassco highlighted numerous accomplishments achieved under her leadership, which spanned over seven years. These include securing significant international funding such as $40 million from the World Bank and $20 million from OPEC, as well as overseeing major projects such as the $3.1 million Icelandic project and a $25 million EU project expected to be approved in September 2025. Glassco also emphasized the establishment of key partnerships, including the bilateral agreement with Senegal and the ratification of international fisheries agreements.
Under her guidance, NaFAA also launched vital programs for local fishermen, such as the Net Exchange Program, Outboard Engines Program, and initiatives supporting women in the fisheries sector. One of the notable achievements was the securing of a $60 million loan to develop the Mesurado Fishing Pier and associated facilities in Liberiaโs coastal counties.
Despite these milestones, Glassco acknowledged the challenges, particularly the slow implementation of existing laws and the ongoing work needed to address the Yellow Card issue inherited from the previous administration.
“I may not be a perfect boss, but together we gave our best,” Glassco said, urging NaFAA staff to support their new leader and continue building on the progress made. She also thanked both former President George M. Weah and the current government for the opportunity to serve.
As she moves on, Glassco pledged to seek redress in clearing her character, ending her message with gratitude and love for both her supporters and detractors.
