The position of embattled speaker, J. Fonati Koffa has again been threatened by a fellow lawmaker.
This time, a Bong County District #6 Representative Moima Briggs Mensah, said while is true she committed to transparency, the rule of law and restoring dignity to the countryβs first branch of government, she wants Koffa removed as a controversial speaker of the House.
In a statement published Monday on her official Facebook page, Rep. Mensah addressed growing speculation surrounding her position amid the political impasse, while clarifying her current absence from the country.
Mensah said she is at present attending an official ECOWAS event in The Gambia. βThereafter, I will proceed to Cape Verde for the Annual Meeting of the WAHO Financial Support Steering Committees of ECOWAS Member States.β
Rep. Briggs Mensah wrote of her unwavering respect for the Supreme Court, and pledged to fully abide by the Courtβs decisions.
On the contrary, the female lawmaker spoke of her preparedness to support efforts to remove the embattled House Speaker Jonathan Fonati Koffa if he fails to secure a quorum.
She cited a loss of βmoral authorityβ over members of the majority bloc of the House as reason to remove Koffa.
“I must also make it clear: I am duty-bound to sign in favor of the removal of the Court-recognized Speaker, Jonathan Koffa, should he failed to produce a quorum,” she wrote. “It is clear that Koffa has lost the moral authority over the majority members of the House for whatsoever reasons.”
Rep. Briggs Mensah, has meanwhile warned against the perception of the Legislature as βunseriousβ or βtroublemakers,β emphasizing the urgent need to restore public trust at that august body.
She said no individual, institution or government entity should override the will and interests of the people, highlighting her vision of a βwell-functioning, transparent and law-abiding Legislature,β as the foundation for moving forward.
“As the Rule of Law writes a proposal for the conclusion of the impasse, and as the Majority Bloc seeks court redress, I must clarify and make my position known,” she said.
Mensah continues: “It is time to restore the honor, dignity and seriousness of the Legislature.”
Rep. Briggs Mensah then called on her colleaguesβ lawmakers to join her in reclaiming the respect they deserve as true representatives of the Liberian people.
The leadership crisis in the House has intensified in recent weeks, with members of the “majority bloc” challenging Speaker Koffa’s authority.
The Supreme Court has intervened, but internal divisions remain deeply rooted.
As political observers await further developments, Rep. Briggs Mensahβs statement signals a significant move within the majority bloc and adds pressure on the Houseβs leadership to resolve the ongoing stalemate. By: Taar U.B. Garnett
